Augmentative/ Alternative Communication from JPPSS

Boardmaker is a great tool to enhance learning and expression for individuals with special needs through symbol-based icons and pictures. You can adapt, create and utilize preexisting boards for any client. Boardmaker with Speaking Dynamically Pro can transform the icon boards into a speech output device
  • Boardmaker with Speaking Dynamically Pro can be downloaded as a trial version on a MAC or Windows for 30 days. The only disadvantage to this software is it costs 562.00$ plus tax to purchase
----
* This web site provides a weekly online newspaper for individuals with special needs.
  • You can download sample news articles, materials, and lesson plans. Unfortunately to purchase a subscription to this great online resource cost anywhere from $140 to $539.

* This symbol supported newspaper for children with special needs is correlated to the national and state standards, includes 4 different reading levels, and offers current events/relevant information.
  • Peer Reviews: “This online resource is great because it offers you lesson plans and activities ranging from low to higher level students.” Maggie Cook MS, SLP-CCC

----
* This online source (called Say it with Symbols) provides free activities, PECs, boards, symbols, stories and more.
  • The website is available to anyone that supports/provides services to individuals with disabilities that use visual supports to assist in with communication.
  • A disadvantage to this website is: most links you need to have Boardmaker downloaded to access to the materials.
----
* This website provides a limited number of free materials, however you do not need Boardmaker to download the picture cards/boards and social stories.
  • One disadvantage to this site is the pictures come in black and white, for color pictures, you must pay to subscribe.
  • I like this web site because there are PDF files the user can download for free and pre-organized pictures by categories.
----
* This website provides lists of pre-set vocabulary words to use for a child with an AAC device. The vocabulary lists are the most frequently occurring vocabulary words based on different ages and populations.
  • The negative aspect of this website is using a pre-determined vocabulary list is not appropriate because it may not match the child’s cognitive age. Every child is different with different priorities and needs; therefore vocabulary lists have to be made specific to that child.
  • This website however can provide a good starting point for determining some key vocabulary words to use for a child with an AAC device
----
* This website is an excellent resource providing 100’s of free adapted stories, language based AAC activities, games, recipes, switch based activities, overlays for devises (example: Tech Speak and Big Mac), worksheets, folder activities, and additional links.
  • This website is extremely beneficial, and easy to maneuver around the site. Links are provided on the left side of the page with the many resources and helpful ideas to use with children that need adapted and visual materials.

APHASIA AND STROKE

Aphasia Treatment

Aphasia from ASHA
The Health Guide

  • This link on About.com gives information about the different types of treatment approaches (i.e.: group therapy .vs. cognitive-linguistic therapy).
  • This site does not go into detail about the different approaches; however it discusses the most effective treatment techniques.

----
*

Aphasia from ASHA provides the types of aphasia, diagnosing and treating aphasia.

  • ASHA discusses the life participation approach for treating people with aphasia, which focuses on real life goals based on activities of daily living
  • This is a website that gives clinicians therapy activities and ideas when working with clients with aphasia. This website also recognizes that every client should be treated differently, but there are some similarities when treating these types of patients.
